The main purpose of the Foundation's Library and Documentation Centre, which was opened in 1975, is the acquisition, conservation and publicising of documents relating to Joan Miró and his art. It also holds a large collection of publications and audiovisual works on the art of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. These are available to researchers, students, professionals in the art world and those interested in art in general. The Library also assists the Foundation in carrying out research and mounting exhibitions.

Accessibility nowadays refers not only to architectural barriers but to making people aware that the arts and culture can be experienced through all the senses. The Joan Miró Foundation is working to ensure that all visitors are able to participate in this experience. Culture is a fundamental human right and museums are responsible for providing access to it.
The Foundation provides guided tours for persons with impaired sight using tactile models, theatre for children with sign language translation on request, an easily accessible Browsing Desk, etc.
